Lord Save Us!

The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”

Matthew 8:25

Where do you first turn when you face storms that threaten you?  To whom do you run for comfort, solace, advice?  Some run to their best friend; someone that they can commiserate with; someone who will take up their cause and uphold their grievance.  For instance, a married woman whose marriage is failing may turn to another woman, and together they can rage against that “horrible man” or vice versa.  This strategy may ease the aching sense of aloneness for the short term, but it is no solution to the real problem.

Amid their storm, the disciples knew exactly where to turn (Matthew 8:25).  They knew that only the Sovereign, all-powerful, Almighty Jesus could calm the wind and waves that threatened them.  So, they went and woke him up saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”  Firstly, they called him “Lord,” because that is who he was and is.  He is the God who made the world and everything in it.  He is the Lord who made heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands (Acts 17:24-28).  Secondly, they owned their need, “save us!”  Many people fail to recognize their need instead they see everything that the other person needs.  They fail to recognize how desperate, pitiful, and inadequate humanity is apart from God. Some will even try to tackle the storms of life on their own. These disciples understood, that without Jesus’ intervention, they were going to drown (die).  Sometimes, we need to get to that point to truly understand our need; to truly accept that the storm is about us, and not about “them.”

Beloved, there is no other name in heaven and on earth by which we must be saved but the name of “Jesus (Acts 4:12).” It seems so simple and yet so many miss it.  There is wonder-working power in this name.  The one who conquered sin and conquered the grave can conquer every principality, power and storm that comes against his people.  The disciples in that battered boat did everything they could to get his full attention.  What about you?  Are you willing to throw yourself before him as Hannah (1 Samuel 1:11), Jacob (Genesis 32:26) and others did?  Are you willing to trust in him 100% for everything?  Are you willing to surrender self-reliance for total faith in Jesus Christ?  Then make your plea, and do not let him go, until he blesses you.  Cry out for your salvation today.  Amen!
