God Breaks In

He is not here; he has risen, just as he said.

Matthew 28:6

The day that changed human history was not a joyful one. Matthew records that there was a violent earthquake, and the guards were so afraid that they shook and became like dead men.  The women who came to the tomb to perform the last rites were sad and somber. This Easter morning was not a time to celebrate, it was a time to weep. But just then God broke through with the news of the resurrection that changed earthly time forever, “He is not here; for he has risen (Matthew 28:6).

This is the way Easter still breaks into our lives.  The good news comes when all seems lost, and when we least expect it.  The good news of Easter comes when we are afraid, disillusioned and sad. It comes when life seems to be at its worst, and the future seems hopelessly bleak.  In these dark and uncertain moments, God steps in, calls us by name, and reminds us that the stone has been rolled back, and death has been swallowed up in victory. God reminds us that Jesus keeps his word, and he is alive and for us. God reminds us, that he is the author of all human history.

Through the prophet, Malachi, God’s word says: “But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays. And you will go out and frolic like well-fed calves (Malachi 4:2).” What a joyful and hopeful metaphor.  This Easter, the Good News for those who fear God, is that the tomb is still empty. Death could not keep our Savior down. Christ is risen with healing in his wings, just as he said he would. It is time to frolic “like well-fed calves.”  It is time to celebrate Christ’s victory over sin and death for our sakes.  May the same joy that invaded the women’s hearts that first Easter morning, invade our hearts this Easter and always.

Blessed Easter!
