Holy Anticipation

You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

Luke 12:40

Time and time again, the Bible makes reference to the unexpected nature of Christ’s return.  He will come back while people are eating and drinking; marrying and giving in marriage, while people are sleeping and while others are working in the field.  In other words, no one will see it coming.  What should we do when we are expecting Jesus to come back and yet are not certain when this will be?

Whenever I am expecting guests at my home, I go through some intense preparation, including cleaning, tidying up, shopping and cooking.  I do this because I want my guests to feel welcome and comfortable.  My guess is that many of us do the same.  As believers, we live in anticipation of the return of our Savior, Jesus Christ.  Luke reminds us that he will come at an unexpected hour (Luke 12:40; See also: Mt. 24: 36-39, 42-44, 48-51; Mt. 25: 5-6, 13; 1 Th. 5: 2-3).  Suppose you knew for sure he would come back tomorrow, how would you prepare for his return?  How would tomorrow’s event change your priorities, thoughts, speech and actions today?  Would Jesus feel comfortable and welcome?  Would you be ready?

The only way to be ready is to get ready!  Paul writing to the Philippians says, “…continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12b).” As we begin this new week, let us thank God for his amazing grace in our lives and let us ask the Holy Spirit to heighten our awareness of Jesus’ imminent return to claim his bride, the church.  We may not know the exact hour of his return, but we know our King is coming, so let us wait with holy anticipation!

Have a joy-filled and expectant week!

Loving Savior, come quickly we pray.  We wait for you; the whole of creation waits for you.  May you find us ready when you come.  In Jesus’ name we pray.  Amen.
