Give Thanks in Everything

In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you .

1 Thessalonians 5:18

As we come to the close of yet another year, let us take a moment to pause, slow down and reflect on the year we have had.  Perhaps there were times this year when life was a struggle, when suffering seemed too much to bear, and confusion overwhelmed you; times when “being grateful” seems to make no sense.  But God’s word says, give thanks (anyway), for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

Then there were those times when life was good.  Times when God provided for you and your family, and he protected you from all harm.  Times when he walked with you and talked with you through his Holy word giving you sufficient grace, hope, guidance and strength for each day.  As you reflect, take nothing for granted.  Make a little time and give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

As Paul says to the Thessalonians, “In everything” (not in ‘most things’ but ‘everything’) “give thanks….”  My take on this instruction is this:  If it was good for them back in Paul’s time, it is good for us today.  So, let us together give thanks to our Lord, God Almighty who blesses our lives with every spiritual blessing in Christ (Ephesians 1:3).  Giving thanks keeps us continually aware of our Lord’s PRESENCE.  He is always close by in the good times and in the challenging times (Hebrews 13:5b; Romans 8: 38-39).  Giving thanks reminds us that God is always in the details, working behind the scenes, even when we cannot see him or feel him.  He has a good purpose for everything (Jeremiah 29:11; Philippians 1:6).  Giving thanks, brings our human will in submission to God’s will; not our will but always his will be done on earth as it is in heaven (Luke 22:42; Matthew 6:10b).

May his PRESENCE fill your heart and home today and in the New Year.  Have a wonderful and grace-filled 2022!
