But Take Heart!

I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.  In this world you will have trouble.  But take heart!  I have overcome the world.

John 16: 33

This year Christmas comes at a very complicated time in our nation and in our lives.  The COVID-19 virus is still raging, with the Omicron and Delta variants threatening our Christmas festivities, hospitals are close to 100% full with sick patients, medical workers and teachers are stretched to breaking point, supply chain issues are far from over, school violence is a constant threat to our children and is affecting them mentally and emotionally, natural disasters like tornadoes and typhoons are making their  presence known and devastating homes along their paths, the political climate has gone from bad to insane…need I go on?  One might be forgiven for thinking this is not a time for celebration.  One might be forgiven for thinking that life is completely hopeless right now.

But as we enter Christmas week, be assured that Jesus is acquainted with your grief concerning life right now and he acknowledges it by reminding believers, “In this world you will have trouble.” Nothing that is happening to you or around you right now is ‘Breaking News’ to Jesus.  He foresaw it and prepared his people for it.  Jesus also assures us that this trouble is temporary.  Indeed, like the labor pains of a pregnant woman, all the anguish is forgotten and is replaced with joy when the child is born into the world (John 16:21).  As we observe Christmas 2021 let us thank God for the birth of Jesus.  This child born in a manger is the Prince of Peace and soon returning Savior.  We can, by faith, rejoice and be glad, that soon these troubles will be history as we enter eternity to be with our Lord and God for ever and ever.

Finally, Jesus says, “But take heart!  I have overcome the world.”  Brethren, be encouraged, you may not see it yet because of all the commotion surrounding you, but Jesus says, your victory is in him, and it is already secure.  This Christmas, hold fast to this precious gift of hope that is undeterred by any circumstance you may be facing.  Jesus Christ has overcome the world.  Hallelujah!

Dear Lord, not by sight, and not by might, but by your Spirit.  Lead me through each day with the peace and confidence of one who knows their Father in heaven.  And this Christmas, welcome into my home and my festivities as I celebrate you alongside my family and friends.  AMEN!
