Prayer of Repentance

If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

 2 Chronicles 7:14

Our Father, you alone are Sovereign over all the affairs under heaven and on earth.  No one can thwart your divine plans (Job 42:2; Isaiah 14:27).

Before time was you were and after time is passed, you will be, eternal God.  Indeed, as your word says, you are the Alpha and the Omega (Rev 22:13), the one and only true God and we worship you, O King of Glory.

Lord we bow before your throne today to ask for your forgiveness.  We, your people who are called by your name have created a mess down here, O LORD.  We have participated in tearing the heart of our nation (2 Chronicles 7:14).

Instead of looking to you (Psalm 121:1) Father, we have turned to partisan religion and placed our trust in mere mortals (Mathew 15:8; Isaiah 29:13).

We have used your name in vain O God.  By turning our church pulpits and prayer gatherings into political platforms (Exodus 20:5).  Father forgive us.

We have pretended to be impartial and yet have actively participated in spreading mistruths and misinformation about others where it suited our cause.  Forgive us LORD.

We have spoken up against abortion O God, while remaining curiously silent about fornication and adultery which lead to abortion.  Forgive us LORD.

We have branded ourselves pro-life while remaining silent, regarding the senseless killings going on within our nation and around the world.  Forgive us LORD.

We have quoted the inscription on our bill, “In God we trust” while continuing to trust most of all in our own abilities, judgments, tactics, and plans.  Forgive us Father.

We have touted as good, that which is an abomination in your eyes, and demonized those who do not think like us.  Forgive us, O LORD (1 John 4:20).

Almighty God restore to us right thinking, righting speaking, and right acting.  Remind us Father, it is not about being right, but about being loving for your sake (1 Corinthians 13:1).

As our nation enters election week, we lift up all our candidates Father to your throne.  We know you died for them and you love them all (Daniel 2:21; Romans 13:1; 1 Peter 2:13).  We ask O Jesus, that you will give us the leader of your choice and then teach us to love, as you have loved us.

Restore a right spirit to our nation Holy Spirit and grant us your peace (John 14:27).  AMEN!
