Impenetrable Shelter

The name of the LORD is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.

Proverbs 18:10

What’s causing you to be afraid today? With everything currently going on in our world, there is no shortage of reasons to be afraid. The devil is working overtime to make sure that there is a fear menu for each category of people under the sun. Fear can be both good and bad. Good fear keeps us from running headlong into danger, while bad fear paralyzes our faith and keeps us from obeying God. What kind of fear are you facing?

The Psalmist reminds us that the name of the LORD is a fortified tower. It is a refuge for the righteous, and they can run to it and be safe. No matter what you may be facing today, only that name provides safety. Moses called upon this name (Numbers 12:13); Joshua called upon this name (Joshua 10:12-14), Nehemiah called upon this name (Nehemiah 2:4) Daniel called upon this name (Daniel 6:10), even Jesus called upon this name (Luke 23:34; Luke 23:46…). What name will you call upon? Who will you depend on?

As little children, we instinctively call out “daddy!” or “mommy!” when we are afraid. We are wired to depend on parents (guardians) for safety. Our relationship with God should be just as instinctive. Purpose to walk in obedience this year, so that you too may be saved from fear. When fear comes knocking, remind yourself that God has not given us (you) a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). When fear comes knocking, run towards God and you will be safe from the tormentor of God’s people.

Dear God, I come to you in faith and cast my fear upon you. I know that there are no easy answers, but no matter how difficult my circumstances may be, your name is my strong tower and strength. Today, I am running to you. Hide me and save me. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen!
