Heart Trouble

Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.

John 14:1

A few years ago, an acquaintance of mine was diagnosed with heart trouble. There was a sense of urgency in dealing with the problem. The doctor told her that if the situation deteriorated it would cost my friend her life. Fortunately, there was a medical procedure available immediately that would improve her quality of life and possibly extend it as well.  With courage and determination, she took the step required, underwent surgery and is enjoying a full life with her family today.

Our current world is filled with anxious, and troubled hearts.  One can even be forgiven for saying it has become a worldwide pandemic. In my role, I encounter troubled hearts, every day.  A troubled heart can spell danger for our well-being. Troubled hearts can induce depression, rage, anxiety, rash decisions, crippling despair or even inactivity.  According to the late minister and author, Tim Keller (1950-2023), a troubled heart (worrying) is not believing God will get it right.”

In John 14, Jesus notices how troubled his disciples were at his approaching departure. So, he decides to intervene. Jesus knew that their despair could only lead to their ruin. He offers a prescription for their troubled hearts saying, “Let not your hearts be troubled. (John 14:1)”  In other words, “Stop worrying. Take your focus off the problem.” Trust in God and trust also in me.  I have the power, and the wisdom.  I know the path and I will guide you.

Today, just as he did back then, Jesus offers us all an immediate, life-altering, life-saving surgery for our heart trouble. The antidote is pure childlike trust. It is willfully choosing, despite all the chaos, to believe that God will get it right.  It is choosing to trust that God has the power, the wisdom and knowledge of the path ahead to guide us through the chaos to the right destination.

If you are troubled by anything today, Jesus says, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.” ( John 14:1).  How will you respond?
