When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”
John 2:3
Weddings are wonderful events. Two people fall in love and come together to be united in holy matrimony. The new couple step out as one unit, ready for whatever the future might bring. We plan carefully for these weddings, paying excruciating attention to every detail, and yet as we all know, there is always that unplanned moment that becomes a permanent part of everyone’s wedding story.
For the groom at the wedding in Cana, the moment came when Jesus’ mother said, “They have no more wine.” Oooof! What a gut punch for the groom. How embarrassing it must have been for him as the host. How inadequate he must have felt in that moment. During this period, weddings in Palestine were lavish events lasting up to a week. The wine ran out on the third day! Enough said.
And yet, how often have we ourselves been in the same position as this groom? How often have we been overcome by a sense of inadequacy, a sense of not being enough. Some of us may be stuck in our current roles at work because a little voice in our head whispers constantly, “You are not good enough.”
The turn around at the wedding in Cana, came about because Jesus was present. The groom invited him to the wedding. Having Jesus in our lives is the defining difference between not enough and enough. For as scripture reminds us, when we are weak, then we are strong for Christ’s power rests on those who believe (2 Cor. 9-10) for action.
We cannot inherit Christianity. We must invite Jesus in. Having Jesus, active in our lives means we have the blessing of his Presence, the blessing of his Provision and the Blessings of his Power. It is time for action, name your inadequacy before the throne of God, and whatever Jesus tells you to do, do it. Let him turn the water in your life into wine. AMEN!
