Run to the Father

Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

Genesis 3:7

Atonement is something we all need because as the Bible says, we all sin.  “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23)” After Adam and Eve sinned in Genesis, their eyes were opened, and they knew they were naked.  Their sin and disobedience was laid bare before them.  At that point they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths to cover their nakedness.  They tried to hide their sin, albeit unsuccessfully.

When Adam and Eve felt the weight of what they had done, when the weight of their sin penetrated their hearts, they did not think of running to the Father who had said he would provide everything they needed, including forgiveness.  Instead, they did two things:  they sewed fig leaves to cover up their nakedness and they hid. We know none of these strategies worked, God found them out.

What happens when our eyes are opened to our brokenness?  What happens when we are overcome by the shame and guilt of falling into sin?  Where do we go to fix that nagging feeling of failure?  Do we run to the Father who promises to provide everything we would ever need, or do we pull away from fellowship and stop going to church?

Here is the truth for us all-sin is not conquered in the darkness of hiding, instead it is there that it grows, and when sin grows it destroys creation and it destroys us.  The only remedy for sin is atonement.  Atonement is: 1-reparation for an offence or injury.  2-the reconciliation of God and humankind through the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ. So here is a thought: when our eyes are opened and we realize we are naked, let us run to the Father who has promised that whosoever believes in Jesus will not perish but have everlasting life.  Let us run to Love and Light that has already extinguished our sin once for all.
