Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. (Proverbs 3:5-6)
Have you ever attempted the “trust fall?” This is purportedly a trust-building game where one person deliberately allows themselves to fall backwards, trusting that other members of the group will catch them. I must admit that this would be an extremely challenging exercise for me. Just thinking about it causes my spine to tense up. Sometimes this is how it is between us and God. We blithely say we trust God, but when we begin to fall, fear kicks in and we instinctively grasp at other earthly things to steady ourselves, ultimately proving that we only trust ourselves.
The Psalmist exhorts us to trust God with all our hearts, and not to lean on our own understanding. He encourages us to trust God with “all our hearts.” This takes effort. We must will our hearts by the power of the Holy Spirit towards trust. We must be willing to fall with the full confidence that God will catch us. It means loosening the tight grip we have on our lives and letting the Holy Spirit lead. It is no secret that the stronger the relationship, the easier it is to trust.
Therefore, as we go through Lent, let us seek to know God more fully and intimately so that we might trust him with all our hearts, in the good times, the bad times, the hard times and even the confusing times. Let us be like Abraham, like Noah, like Mary and like all those saints who have gone before us, who trusted God even when things did not make sense.
This week, let us take time to know him more fully, to worship him, adore him and serve him.
Have a reflective and blessed week!
