Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it is near, right at the door.

I was listening to a documentary regarding the terrible tsunami that hit Thailand in 2004. One of the people that experienced the tsunami firsthand, described how the people on the beach looked out across the water to a white line in the horizon with lazy curiosity. The white line was the signal that an ominous danger was approaching, but those present had no idea. Even as the tsunami approached some of the tourists grabbed their cameras and cellphones and ran towards it to take pictures and videos. By the time they realized the danger they were in, it was too late for thousands. They tried to run for the hills, but the tsunami overwhelmed them, and thousands died.
The description of the dreadful tsunami is a great metaphor for the danger that is looming upon humanity. Like those tourists many of us view the breakdown of societal structures, political structures, moral structures etc. with mild irritation and curiosity. Many have no idea that this shaking of our foundations is the “white line,” an ominous approaching danger that will visit great distress upon the world. Many are running towards the “white line” instead of away from it. These signs signal a looming danger and the end of the age.
So, what are believers to do in light of these signs? The word of God calls believers to pay heed to the signs. These incoming waves and disturbances are a warning to us who believe. The writer of the gospel of Mark repeatedly urges Christians to get ready and keep watch for our redemption “is near, right at the door (vs. 29). God also calls believers to understand what these signs mean. We must understand and believe the truth of God’s word (vs.30). These signs signal terror and death for unbelievers and celebration and eternal life for them that believe. The Lord is coming to judge and to examine our stewardship. It is time to get ready. When Jesus left this earth, he assigned everyone a task. Are you doing what God asked you to do? Jesus is coming with the angels to gather his elect from the four ends of the earth and the heavens. Are you ready? Are you watchful? Are you waiting? The “white line” is looming, but our Savior is near. AMEN!
