Faith Over Fear

We are living in a time of increasing fear.  Like a low-grade fever lurking uncomfortably below the surface is this gnawing fear consuming the world’s inhabitants today.  No one is safe.  There is something for everyone.  Such fear is valid and normal.  The world has become a frightening place and fear is a natural response of the flesh to the perceived threat.  Fear tells the brain, “I am not sure you will make it to the other side.”

Many years ago, I decided to travel to my village to visit my mother.  The bus I was traveling in arrived at the junction to my home, at 3:00AM.  Instead of waiting till daylight before beginning the one-mile trek to my home, I decided to tempt fate and began the lonely walk home with only the echoing sound of my footsteps for company.  About halfway home, fear gripped my throat, my heart began to thump loudly, and I felt an ominous presence watching me in the dark.  I wanted to run, but instead I prayed under my breath saying, “Lord, I am sorry I made this foolish decision, but I am leaning on your word, that even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will not fear, for you are with me; your rod and staff they comfort me.”  I continued to walk towards home praying fervently, my spine curling, and then before long, I was at the gate and shortly thereafter within the safety of my mother’s house.  I know there was an evil presence out there and it made me very afraid but by God’s mercy, I made it home.

And perhaps this is how believers should face their fear; acknowledge that it is real but call upon faith in God to meet the moment.  Fear can only threaten our temporary destination, but it cannot threaten our ultimate destination.  God assures us that we will arrive at our ultimate destination.  We may get there scarred, and raggedy, but we will get there.  As we see in the story of Jesus calming the storm in Mark 4:35-41, it is Jesus who invites the disciples on the journey fully aware that a furious squall will arise, and it is Jesus who gets them safely to the other side.  Likewise, it is Jesus who invites us into this life, and he is fully aware of all the storms we will face.  He assures us of his Presence in the storms of life and he promises to deliver us safely home.  Beloved, continue to stand on the promises that cannot fail even when the storms of doubt assail.  Let your faith drive out your fear. AMEN!
