STOP!

There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

 Luke 21:25-17

From the beginning of civilization people have been looking for signs signaling the end of the world.  There have been prophecies and predictions throughout the generations, as humanity wonders, “is this the end?”  With each generation we continue to move closer to the end.  In this season of Advent, the word of God comes to remind us to STOP and pay attention to the signs in our generation.  Safe driving demands that we come to a complete stop at a stop sign and look both ways before crossing carefully to the other side of the road.

Right now, the signs are all around us and oppressive darkness is closing in, but God’s word calls us to STOP and look back, as we reflect on God coming in the flesh to dwell among us.  God calls us to STOP and look forward to his final return.  God calls us also, to STOP and look around and in-between at what is happening right now.

During this season of Advent, God calls believers to watch and wait and prepare and yearn for him.  He calls believers to get ready for what happens next.  God’s word calls us not to fear but to be wide awake, watching and waiting for the Lord who never tires of coming into the world to dwell among humanity.  And within the signs that we now see in our generation:  this unrelenting COVID-19 pandemic, the climate catastrophe, the growing culture of deceit and falsehoods, the rising extremism and violence, the growing inflation…, God makes clear to us once again, that the Kingdom is near, and our redemption is drawing closer.

So dear friend, STOP living unconsciously, reflect on what these signs mean and let the Holy Spirit illuminate your heart and your spirit as you wait for our Risen Lord.

Dear Father, the signs are all around me.  Give the wisdom I need to understand the urgency of these times and give me the strength to get ready for you.  Here I am, at the foot of your throne, fill me with your power and use me for your glory.  AMEN!
