He will cover you with his feathers and under his wings you will find refuge.  His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.

Psalm 91:4

Have you ever seen a hen protecting her young?  She gets vicious.  When she senses a threat to her chicks, she puffs up, spreads her wings, and clucks to alert her young ones to shelter under her protective feathers.   That’s what a mother does.  She protects.  On this Mother’s Day, we stop collectively to honor the phenomenal women who protected us in the womb and then gave us life.  They did not just give us life, they cradled us, nurtured us, continued to protect us, disciplined us, taught us, prayed for us, and hopefully pointed us to, or led us to Christ.  In the end that is all that counts.

We would be remiss however if in the midst of all the fanfare, we forgot that while Mother’s Day is about mothers, it is mainly about God, who gave us such amazing moms.  It is God who endowed our mothers with all the qualities we admire, and it is God wo makes us for the mothers who failed us.  For he promises to “cover you with his feathers and give you refuge” just as he did the children of Israel.  He also promises that his faithfulness will be a shield and rampart; a strong and protective wall around your life that you can count on.

If you are feeling left out for any reason on this Mother’s Day, run to him, the Lord of Glory, he is your protector, your hiding place, your deliverer.  You can count on him, not just on Mother’s Day, but always.  Amen.
