He Fights for You

David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.  This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel.  All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.”

1 Samuel 17: 45-47

What is faith?  Faith is believing that which is not yet seen.  It is the substance of things hoped for (Hebrews 11:1). When David faced the Philistine Goliath, he did not allow any doubt to thrive in his heart.  He confidently proclaimed that which he hoped for.  He proclaimed that God would give him victory.  His trust was fully centered on God’s power.

God calls us to the same relentless faith in our daily lives.  He calls us to confess what isn’t, as though it was, and to believe that he is able to deliver.  The greater our struggle, the greater our faith should be.  Faith isn’t magic.  Faith is unflinching belief and trust in God.

The closer our relationship with God, the greater our faith in him will be.  So let us purpose to know God more fully through the power of his Spirit, so that our lives will be fueled by faith and not by sight.  This week, let us practice walking by faith in those situations that confound us so that the world will know that it is God Almighty who fights for us.
