The Most Important Decision

But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.

Joshua 24:15

Every new day presents us with choices; some complex and some simple.  This morning you probably had to choose what to wear, what to eat, and what to do first when you arrived at work.  Life is all about choices.  And yet amid these choices, there is one that stands above all else, and we ignore it at our own peril.

Here we find Joshua, calling the people to make a choice between serving other gods, or serving the One true God.  He sets an example with the clear declaration: “But as for me and my house we will serve the Lord.”  I am quite certain that the people had other choices they needed to make that day, but this was the most important choice of all.  Joshua was presenting them with a choice that was a matter of life or death.

Today we are confronted with a similar dilemma, and we must choose whom we will serve.  We can serve self, ambition, money, position, promotion, or something else.  These choices are ours to make, or we can do everything as unto God.  Choice is a conscious action.  Joshua’s declaration for himself and his family was conscious.  As we go to our various lines of service today and every day, what choice will we make?  Which master will we serve?  Our decision will have eternal consequences, so let us choose prayerfully and wisely.

May the Lord bless the work of your heart and hands.
